This workshop consists of three sequences of 5 weeks, totalling 15 weeks. Each 5-week sequence costs 200$. A discount is available for those with extenuating circumstances, please contact us. All classes are held on Mondays, from 7-9pm.

  • Part 1: Games as systems, February 11 to March 11
  • Part 2: Games as experience, March 19 to April 16
  • Part 3: Finetuning your game, April 29 to May 27 (registration covers this sequence)

Over 15 weeks, we will explore three distinct aspects of game design. Sign up for all three, or choose the one most relevant to your development as a designer. Each section will provide hands-on design experience. We will make, play, and critique a selection of games to explore important game design concepts. I will teach you formal aspects of being a game designer: how to analyze systems, create engaging player experiences, and work in a creative and iterative design environment.

Part 3: Finetuning Your Game (5 session, Mondays, April 29 to May 27)

Come with a game you have already designed! Each week we will focus on refining one aspect of your game: Systems Design, Object Design, Tutorialization, Balancing and Pitching. There will be a heavy focus on playtesting, critique and iterating as you work towards a final product.

  • Monday, April 29 19, 7:00-9:00pm
  • Monday, May 6, 7:00-9:00pm
  • Monday, May 13, 7:00-9:00pm
  • Monday, May 20, 7:00-9:00pm
  • Monday, May 27, 7:00-9:00pm

Part 1: Games As Systems (5 session, February 11 to March 11)

We will learn to look at games and think about them as formal systems. Each week we will focus on a different topic: Rules and Restriction, Game Economies, Probability and Chance, Systems and Feedback Loops. We will take the time to analyze how they exist in the games we know and love. We will then critically and thoughtfully integrating these formal concepts into a game that will be developed over the course of the workshop.

Part 2: Games As Experience (5 sessions, Tuesdays, March 19 to April 16)

We will look at games and think about them as experiences. How do people interact with our games? How does our design impact players? Each week we will focus on a different topic: Playtesting, Rewards and Motivation, Goals and Loss Aversion, Games as Art, and Flow State.
